The
PAPP Story
When you talk about familiar names around Newnan,
Georgia, you’re bound to hear examples such
as Erskine Caldwell, Lewis Grizzard, Alan Jackson,
Drew Hill, Jerome Walton, and Steve Bedrosian.
How about these names: Peniston, Arnold, Parks and
Powell? They’re the founders of what is today
known as the PAPP Clinic. PAPP is almost as much
a part of the local landscape as the fine old homes
along Main St., having served local families since
1919.
It’s simple. Take the P from Peniston, the
A from Arnold, the P from Parks, and the P from
Powell and what do you get? PAPP, of course. But
what you really get is something wonderful for thousands
of people Newnan and the Coweta County region.
The name PAPP originated in 1961. The practice origins
go all the way back to the turn of the twentieth
century, to 1919. What a year! One that would have
lasting impact on a very large scale. Something
big would happen in Newnan, Georgia, too.
1919
WW I is just over.
In the U.S. the 18th Amendment was adopted, kicking
off the prohibition era.
Woodrow Wilson is president and also wins the Nobel
Peace Prize.
Dial telephones are introduced by the American Telephone
and Telegraph Company.
Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity is
confirmed.
Dr. Joseph Peniston, following in his father’s
footsteps. starts his medical practice in Newnan,
Georgia.
1939
World War II begins
Franklin D. Roosevelt is president
A postage stamp costs 3 cents
Dr. James H. Arnold partners with Dr. Peniston.
Construction of a clinic begins on the corner of
Jefferson and Lee Streets, in Newnan.
1946
The war’s over.
Dr. Spock publishes his famous book on childcare
A postage stamp still costs 3 cents
Nearly 3 million babies are born in the US
Dr. Joe Parks, Jr., joins Drs. Peniston and Arnold.
He begins to take on all the practice’s obstetrical
cases. By the time he retired in 1985, he had delivered
some 7,200 Newnan and Coweta County babies.
1956
Dwight Eisenhower is president
Postage stamp: still 3 cents.
Elvis Pressley is the rage.
Ultrasound begins to be used for pregnant women
Dr. Jack H. Powell, Jr., joins the group, adding
surgery to the list of offerings and creating the
first multi-disciplinary clinic in the county. The
final P is in place.
1961
John F. Kennedy becomes U.S. President
Alan Shepard officially becomes the first U.S. astronaut.
Patsy Cline releases “Crazy.”
The four partners incorporate, officially forming
the PAPP Clinic.
Today
and Beyond
So much history. So many milestones. It’s
hard to imagine the best is yet to come, but it
surely is – in the form of exciting new partnerships,
dramatic advances in medical technology, and enhanced
capacities in health, healing, and service.
Dr. Peniston would no doubt be surprised -- but
he would most certainly be pleased.
